In Panaji, the fisheries department is set to introduce a pioneering project aimed at modernizing fish sales in the state by launching electric fishing vehicles (EVs). These innovative three-wheeler EVs come equipped with both solar power and electric charging capabilities to ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly operations. They also feature refrigerated compartments to preserve the freshness of the fish and a mobile sales platform for seafood transactions.

An official from the department stated, "This is the first EV dedicated to selling fish in Goa. The unique setup allows for the sale of fresh fish during the day and fried fish in the evening, catering to diverse consumer preferences.” The fisheries department will soon invite interested entrepreneurs to apply for the opportunity to operate these vehicles, encouraging fish vendors and farmers to explore this new business avenue.

The initial launch will introduce ten of these advanced vehicles on the streets, with plans to add another 40 later in the year. This initiative is part of a larger effort to support local fish vendors and improve the seafood supply chain in Goa. The launch of the first ten EVs will coincide with the Narali Poornima celebrations on Monday, a traditional festival observed by fishing communities along India's western coastal regions, including Goa. The festival is a gesture of devotion to the sea and a prayer for its protection, marking the beginning of the fishing season in the state.
